At the age of 35, John James Audubon set out to study and draw every bird in the United States. His multi-volume work, "Birds of America" was first published in 1827 and contained over 400 lifelike plate drawings of his feathered subjects. In 2010, a copy of Audubon's masterpiece sold for over $10 million at auction, thereby making it the most expensive book in the world.
