The permanent art displays in Willard Library have stories of their own to tell. Click on the pieces below to learn more about them.
Easter Egg Tree
The Easter Egg Tree was created by Margaret Maier, Willard Library Children’s Librarian for 50 years. With its blown-eggshells decorated to look like literary characters, the tree was a spring tradition at the Library for many years, beginning in 1951. Maier handcrafted and added new eggs each year, and removed eggs as they became dirty or took great falls.
Oak Corner Cabinet
The identity of the cabinetmaker is not known. The oak corner cabinet has been a possession of the Library since the 1920s, and possibly earlier.
Original Charm String
This charm string of buttons, created by Evansville social activist Albion Fellows Bacon, inspired her 1929 book of fairytales for children, The Charm String.
Photograph of Gray Davis Williams
The photographer is unknown. Gray Davis Williams was the first Head Librarian at Willard Library with a professional academic degree. She served in that role from 1941 to 1956, during which time she created the Children’s Room.
“Fantasy Animals in the Park” Stained Glass Windows
Created by Charlotte Paul, the “Fantasy Animals in the Park” stained glass windows were dedicated on July 29, 1982, to the memory of Gray Davis Williams, Willard Library Head Librarian from 1941 to 1956.
“The Fairy Tale” Print
The print, “The Fairy Tale,” by Walter Firle, was presented to the Children’s Room in memory of Geraldine Schlundt, Children’s Room assistant from 1945 to 1954.
